New to the family – Nikon D200

The time had finally come to upgrade my D40 and although I was originally looking for a D90 as a replacement I speared off at the last minute and brought an older but much more professional D200 and I absolutely love it. Full manual overrides and all the important buttons are on the ouside of the camera, not hidden away in the menus :)

I’ve taken a couple of shots over the weekend and I’m very pleased with it so far, I’ll keep the photography blog updated with new pics from it shortly :)

Check it out with the fixed 35mm attached – lovely.

How I Met The Walrus

Personally I’ve never been a massive Beatles fan but I’ve always been a fan of the message they represented. That of peace, love and a fair amount of natural drugs I should imagine. This video uses an interview from 14 year old boy who snuck into Lennons hotel room and interviewed John with animation overlaid to visualise the message.

It’s one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while and well worth a watch.

Fixed Lenses Rule

I mentioned a while back that I was going to buy a fixed 35mm lens for my SLR, well I finally parted ways with my hard earned cash and bought the Nikon 35mm AF-S 1.8G lens.

It’s fantastic, I’ve had better results with this than I ever managed with the kit lens (which I sold) or with my Tamron 18-270mm lens which although is fantastic sucks in the dark.

This fixed lens is amazing though, it has such an adjustable depth of field it really suits my subject in sharp focus background blurry style. Heck the first two photos I took sat in my car in the dark outside Jessops (shown below) were enough to sell it to me. Fantastic buy!

Lytro Light Field Camera

In my opinion cameras haven’t really changed in years. I mean yes we have much more advanced sensors, better lenses and the general quality of cameras is improving all the time but the standard point – frame – focus – snap is still the same as it was when cameras were first invented.

However with the introduction of Lytros new camera the Light Field camera all you do is point – frame and shoot. No focussing required. You can then focus any point of the image later.

I don’t think I will be investing in the first model but when they release a follow up model I could well be tempted as I do see this as the future of Photography.

New Site!

Because my old site kept getting comment spammed and I fancied a change today I’ve launched a new homepage – www.nick-hurst.com

I was trying to achieve a much more simplistic homepage design which I think I’ve acheived. It auto-resizes depending on the size of your browser window. Quite smart I think.
